Week 1_Activity 1.1

⠀⠀Media and information literate person is very crucial nowadays because we are living in the 21st century wherein we are surrounded by technologies that improve in a day to day basis. The advantage about being literate in media and information in our modern world is that we are to differentiate false statements and from those real and true. According to Nordic Information Center for Media and Communication Research, Media and information literacy (MIL) is considered a crucial competence in today’s society.

⠀⠀Stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” Basically, MIL gives us the freedom to express ourselves, our thoughts and even information we possess is very important as it gives equal rights to the citizens of the country. Not only does MIL gives us the freedom of speech but it also gifts the people with such power of competency that every individual need to fully understand, comprehend and even benefit from the media and information being spread worldwide. I as a student, we need or let’s say, we should be more into media and information to be used in our future endeavors that are most likely to help us in the near future, in my case, to be a Doctor.
We live in a democratic country, the Philippines. It is of everyone’s right, no matter what age you are in, gender identity, or where you stand is, everyone is still entitled to their opinion. Another example is let’s say about the passing of SOGIE Bill. There are 2 sides, those who don’t want to and does who want to. No matter how against you are with op’s opinion, their say and their strand, it is of no good to bring them down, call them names and such. It is their right to speak up. As someone against the statement dropped, you may educate but never harass.

⠀⠀As a citizen and a student that lives and study in the Philippines, a democratic country, it is not my job however it is my decision to be a person who value the importance of being a media and information literate person. Being “that” person gave me the advantage to become more literate. It has improved and benefited the quality of my life, environment and cohesive learning units.

⠀⠀To become a media literate doesn’t mean to necessarily memorize facts, and or statistics, rather it is to educate yourself, ask the right and proper questions about what you have encountered, and to be an information literate is how you recognize the information presented in front of you whether needed, to locate, evaluate and or use. MIL really does equipped the citizens a thing called competency that I am sure they will benefit from media and information channels that surrounds as at this very moment such as the right to freedom of opinion and expression like what stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Week 1_Activity 1.2

⠀⠀When I first read “People as Media and People in Media” the first thought that both are in the world of media (obviously). To be more specific, People as Media and People in Media are considered those who are not just involved in the Media first base but deeper than that, meaning they are involved in the analysis, evaluation, production and or the use of media.

⠀⠀The words right words to describe both are eluding me. The only thing that I can say is that “People as Media” are those who relay the message, information and or data through a specific medium that will reach hundreds and even thousands of people. To my knowledge they can the people that we are surrounded by most of the time, example are a classmate, YouTubers, bloggers, tiktokerists and many more. “People in Media” on the other hand are those who provide the information, message and data themselves. They are not relaying it, it is coming from them. In a day-to-day basis, they are the teachers, authors, hosts and many more alike.
